Led by the Spirit

Image
1 Nephi 4:6 And I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do. The Holy Ghost leads; he does not push. He is ahead of us, showing us the way to go, rather than behind us, herding us along. Following a leader requires us to attend to his direction, keeping our eyes and ears open, lest he go around a bend in the path and we fail to follow and so fall into a ditch.

Writing Revelation

1 Nephi 3:20 And also that we may preserve unto them the words which have been spoken by the mouth of all the holy prophets, which have been delivered unto them by the Spirit and power of God, since the world began, even down unto this present time. God gave Adam a written language from the very beginning so that God's words could be preserved (see Moses 6:5-6) . God speaks to prophets, and they record what they have learned, and this is scripture.  God may also speak to us, and we should likewise write what we learn. Our personal record may not be scripture to the Church, but it becomes scripture to us and our posterity.  The more we write, the more God will give us to write. For this reason, I write as I ponder the scriptures. I want to preserve the thoughts, impressions, and even the words I am given so that my posterity will know what God taught me, that these things may enrich their lives. My writing does not replace their personal responsibility to receive revelation for...

Words of the Living Prophets

Image
1 Nephi 3:18 For behold, they have rejected the words of the prophets. Wherefore, if my father should dwell in the land after he hath been commanded to flee out of the land, behold, he would also perish. Wherefore, it must needs be that he flee out of the land. The willful, rebellious Jews rejected the warnings God sent them through His prophets. The Jews didn't want to change. They wanted God to bless them in their stubborn, sinful ways. They wanted the blessings without the prerequisite obedience. They were condemned to destruction because of their misuse of agency. It always comes down to agency. We must beware how we treat the words of the living prophets in our day.

God Is My Failsafe

1 Nephi 3:7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them. When the Lord asks me to do something, I must have faith that the Lord will open the way to help me do it. God does not give me commandments so I can fail. In other words, God gives no impossible commandments. He would not be just if He gave a commandment that He knew was beyond my ability without also providing a means to perform it. When I receive a commandment either from the scriptures, from a leader, or by personal revelation, that seems beyond my ability, I can ask God for the means to keep it. Like Nephi, I have learned that the answer comes as I move forward, sometimes not knowing beforehand what comes next.

A Willing Heart

1 Nephi 3:6 Therefore go, my son, and thou shalt be favored of the Lord, because thou hast not murmured. Though Nephi's brothers balked at the commandment their Father, Lehi, had received to send the boys back to Jerusalem to fetch the scriptures, Nephi accepted the assignment without hesitation. He trusted his father's prophetic calling, and he trusted the Lord.  Faithful obedience brings the Lord's favor. Because Nephi's heart was right, and he was anxious to be obedient, when a commandment came, he was ready to try. Attitude is the key to happiness and joy in the work of the Lord. God loves a willing heart.
